About the RAL Colour System

The RAL colour system, managed by the RAL gGmbH institute in Germany, is the most widely used colour standard in architecture, construction, industrial coatings and powder coating. RAL Classic contains 213 standardised colours, each identified by a four-digit number (e.g. RAL 9010 Pure White). The system is the default specification method for paint and coatings in India, Europe and the Middle East, used extensively in steel fabrication, aluminium profiles, automotive components and infrastructure projects.

Beyond RAL Classic, the system includes RAL Design (1,825 colours organised by hue, lightness and chroma) and RAL Effect (490 colours including metallic finishes). Our database cross-references every RAL shade with its nearest Pantone, NCS and HEX digital equivalents, and maps it to commercially available Indian paint shades from Asian Paints, Berger, Nerolac and Dulux for seamless specification in Indian projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the RAL colour system?
RAL is a standardised colour matching system originating from Germany, used worldwide in architecture, construction and industrial coating. RAL Classic contains 213 colours, each with a unique four-digit code. It is the default colour specification for powder coating and industrial paint in India.
How do I convert RAL to HEX?
Use our search above to find any RAL code, then click through to the detail page where the HEX equivalent is displayed with a copy button. Note that HEX is an approximation since RAL colours are defined by physical pigment standards.
What is the difference between RAL Classic, Design and Effect?
RAL Classic has 213 time-tested industrial colours. RAL Design offers 1,825 colours arranged by hue, lightness and chroma for architects. RAL Effect adds 490 modern colours including metallic finishes for creative applications.
Can I find Indian paint equivalents for RAL colours?
Yes. Every RAL detail page on Color.Codes.in shows the closest shades from Asian Paints, Berger, Nerolac and other Indian brands, ranked by CIE Delta-E accuracy score.
How accurate are RAL to Pantone conversions?
RAL and Pantone are independent colour systems with different formulations. An exact 1:1 match is uncommon. We use CIE Delta-E to find the nearest Pantone shade and display a quality rating (Good, Fair, Poor) so you can assess suitability.
