How We Calculate Colour Matches

Our conversion tool uses the CIE Delta-E 2000 (CIEDE2000) algorithm, the gold standard for perceptual colour difference measurement. Here is how it works:

  1. Colour Space Conversion: Both the source and target colours are converted from their native colour space (RGB, CMYK, etc.) into CIE L*a*b*, a perceptually uniform colour space.
  2. Delta-E Calculation: The CIEDE2000 formula computes the perceived difference between the two L*a*b* values, accounting for lightness, chroma and hue weighting factors.
  3. Ranking: All colours in the target system are compared, and the closest matches (lowest Delta-E) are returned.
  4. Quality Rating: Delta-E below 1.0 = Exact (imperceptible difference), 1.0-3.0 = Close (minor difference), above 3.0 = Approximate (noticeable difference).

This approach is more accurate than simple Euclidean distance in RGB space, because RGB is not perceptually uniform. Two colours that are far apart in RGB values may look similar to the human eye, and vice versa.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert CMYK to HEX?
Enter your CMYK code in the input field above and click Convert. Our tool uses the CIE Delta-E 2000 algorithm to calculate the nearest HEX match from our database of over 15,000 colour entries.
How accurate is CMYK to HEX conversion?
Since CMYK and HEX are different colour systems with distinct gamuts, exact matches are rare. We display a Delta-E score with every result: values below 1.0 are virtually identical, below 3.0 are close matches, and above 5.0 are approximate. The match quality badge indicates the accuracy level.
Can the same CMYK code have different HEX matches?
Yes. The nearest match depends on the target system's available colours. We show the top 5 closest matches ranked by Delta-E distance so you can choose the most suitable option for your project.
What is Delta-E and why does it matter?
Delta-E (dE) measures the perceived difference between two colours in the CIE Lab colour space. We use the CIEDE2000 formula, which is the most perceptually uniform metric. A Delta-E below 1.0 means the difference is imperceptible to the human eye.
Is this conversion tool free to use?
Yes. Our CMYK to HEX converter is completely free with no registration required. Convert as many colours as you need for your design, architecture or painting projects.
